Section Tenor with Transpet
“The time of blossoming now comes with joy and great beauty ... The rays of the sun approaches and everything is reborn.”
The words of a 17th-Century Swedish hymn, “Den blomstertid nu kommer” inspire this program which explores music of abundant joy and beauty. This concert features sublime works by Clemens non Papa, Kolmodin, Billings, Pärt, Tormis, Tavener, and more.
I will be performing two selections from Amy Woodforde-Finden’s Four Indian Love Lyrics (Kashmiri Song, Til I Wake) with Dr. Eun-Hee Park, piano, as part of a concert celebrating music by women.
The concert is being presented as part of USD Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Conference Do Something: Practice and Power.

Performing the role of T-Boy in Libby Larsen’s The Silver Fox
Hosted by composer Abbie Betinis, our popular Courtroom Concerts take place at noon most Thursdays in the Landmark Center in downtown Saint Paul. This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area. These one-hour concerts are free and open to the public.
The Silver Fox: Family Opera in One Act is based on the bayou legend of a young girl who transforms into a silver fox to use her magical powers! Larsen’s music weaves Cajun folk tunes into a lyrical, lilting fable.

Section Tenor in Transept
Transept returns to the Cathedral to open the 2024-25 Season with a journey from darkness to light. This varied program includes ethereal plainchant, the splendor of Renaissance polyphony, and a selection of exciting music from contemporary composers. Works by Tallis, Lassus, Macmillan, Caroline Shaw, Dobrogosz, and Kirchner.
In this session, Dr. Juan Carlos Mendoza will offer an introduction to Puerto Rican and Cuban Song repertoire in the Meisel Room, Westminster Presbyterian Church. Free and open to the public!
The OpenSource Recital celebrates 11 years of Source with two Minnesota premieres, the first A Path Home with words by Minnesota baritone Rodolfo Nieto and composer Victor Marquez-Barrios, a result of the American Composers Forum and the McKnight Visiting Composer Grant, and the second, Anger in Open Mouths: three sweet songs by Laura Nevitt, a collaboration between Source Song Festival Artistic Director Clara Osowski, and Sparks and Wiry Cries Artistic Director Erika Switzer.
Also featured on the program are songs that composers Janika Vandervelde, Carol Barnett, and Libby Larsen wanted to hear again. Performers include Maria Jette, Ahmed Anzaldua, Clara Osowski, Casey Rafn, Stephen Swanson, Juan Carlos Mendoza, and Erika Switzer. We’ll honor and tribute our wonderful friend, Paul Sperry, as we celebrate his long life of American song, and present the Paul Sperry American Song Initiative Award, an annual award given to advocates of song performance, creation, and scholarship.

Coming for the first time to the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Transept’s beloved Christmas program interweaves sources ancient and modern, from plainchant to medieval carols to modern gems. Featuring music by Lassus, Praetorius, Distler, Frank, Stopford, Weir, Mahler, and more, Transept Christmas is not to be missed!
I will be collaborating with pianist Scott Arens on a short program of English and Spanish Art Songs by Copland, Britten, Ginastera, and Guastavino.

Border CrosSing, led by artistic director Ahmed Anzaldúa, joins the Minnesota Orchestra with El Mesías, a bilingual Spanish-English cross-cultural combination of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah and Navidad Nuestra, a Christmas cantata by Argentinian composer Ariel Ramírez. Together with the vocal soloists and choir, the unique combination of Andean instruments and the Baroque orchestra blur the lines between Western classical and South American folk traditions.

Mr. Mendoza will be joining the cast for the premiere of Reinaldo Moya’s opera Tienda, presented by Schubert Club.
Mr. Mendoza will be singing the roles of Javier, a fellow musician in the 1880s story, and Aarón in the 1930s, a young man who has just arrived in Minnesota and is taken under Luis Garzón's wing.

Mr. Mendoza will join the Minnesota ensemble Border CrosSing as they present a bilingual, Spanish-English version of Handel’s “Messiah” paired with “Navidad Nuestra” by Ariel Ramirez. He will sing with the ensemble for “Messiah” but will be featured as a soloist throughout “Navidad Nuestra.”
